Things to Do in Sligo for Families

Sligo, which is tucked away on Ireland’s west coast, is a paradise for families seeking adventure, nature, history, and a sprinkle of magic. It strikes that perfect balance between outdoor fun and cozy spots to unwind, making it an amazing getaway whether you’re traveling with little ones, teens, or a mix of both.

It is one of my favorite locations to take my family or just to do solo tours (more on that in a later blog!) and I’m excited to share my getaway with you here.

If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping into a postcard-perfect landscape while keeping the whole family entertained, Sligo is definitely the place to be. Let’s get to exploring this iconic location together.

Explore the Stunning Beaches

The beaches in Sligo are the kind of spots that invite you to take a deep breath and forget your worries for a while. If you’re visiting with kids, Strandhill Beach is a must-see. It’s a treat to the eyes and amazing for some surfing adventures. Since it’s summer, this is a perfect opportunity to take use of it!

While it’s well-known for its surf culture, it’s equally enjoyable for families wanting to splash in the water, construct epic sandcastles, or even cover someone in sand too like I did, or just run free on the golden sands. You can also go for a romantic walk with your significant other when no one’s looking.

Plus, there’s a playground nearby, perfect for little ones who still have energy to spare after a day at the beach. And when hunger hits, you can’t miss out on the legendary Mammy Johnston’s, where you’ll find the best ice cream you’ve ever tasted.

If you’re in the mood for something a bit more tranquil, Enniscrone Beach is another family-friendly gem with miles of soft sand and some of the most stunning sunset views in Ireland.

It’s a wonderful spot for a leisurely stroll, and if your family is up for a unique experience, Kilcullen’s Traditional Seaweed Baths offer a relaxing soak that’s been enjoyed for over a century. Their unique services and iconic seaweed baths will make you feel like modern day Ariel for sure.

Take a Boat Trip on Lough Gill

No trip to Sligo would be complete without getting out on the water. A boat trip on Lough Gill is a fantastic way to see Sligo from a fresh angle. The kids will have a blast spotting wildlife along the shore while you soak in the breathtaking scenery. One of the highlights is the famous Isle of Innisfree, immortalized by W.B. Yeats’ poem.

Even if poetry isn’t your thing, there’s something magical about drifting past an island rich in history. Poetry holds a special part of this area’s people and indulging into these makes for an amazing memory land.

For families who prefer a more hands-on adventure, renting a kayak or paddleboard is a great way to explore at your own pace. The calm waters make it a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Plus, there’s always the chance of spotting otters or herons along the way, which makes it feel like a real adventure. We recommend Torc waterfall where you’ll get local ideas to visit the Torc waterfall.

Step Back in Time at Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery

History might not be the first thing that gets kids excited, but Carrowmore has a unique way of sparking their imaginations. This ancient site boasts some of the oldest megalithic tombs in Ireland, dating back over 5,000 years.

Strolling through the stone circles and tombs feels like stepping into a different world, and the visitor center does a fantastic job of bringing history to life with its interactive exhibits.

If your kids are into myths and legends, they’ll be thrilled to hear about Queen Maeve, the warrior queen of Connacht, whose tomb is said to sit atop Knocknarea Mountain nearby. And if your family is up for a little adventure, you can even hike up to it. (more on that later!)

Climb Knocknarea and Visit Queen Maeve’s Cairn

For families with kids who crave adventure, climbing Knocknarea is an absolute must. The hike isn’t too tough, and the breathtaking views from the top make it all worthwhile. I would suggest not going with babies, since it can come with extra care.

You’ll be treated to stunning sights of Sligo’s coastline and countryside, and the enormous cairn believed to be Queen Maeve’s final resting place adds a touch of mystery to the whole experience.

There’s a wooden boardwalk that makes the climb easier, and along the way, you’ll encounter fairy trees, wishing stones, and other enchanting details that make it feel like you’ve stepped right into an Irish folklore tale. It’s one of those experiences that truly immerses you in the heart of ancient Ireland.

Discover Sligo Folk Park

If your family enjoys a bit of nostalgia and hands-on history, Sligo Folk Park is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. It’s a recreated village that showcases what life was like in rural Ireland in the past, complete with charming old shops, a thatched cottage, and even a traditional forge. We saw some really look houses with traditional chimney rooftops.

Kids will have a blast with the vintage toys and farm animals, while adults can relax in the delightful café and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. It’s one of those places that feels like a delightful trip back in time. It made me feel like I was part of the great Irish history too.

Visit Eagles Flying

If you’re looking for a family outing that’s both fun and educational, Eagles Flying is an absolute gem. It is located just outside Sligo, this amazing bird of prey sanctuary lets you get up close and personal with some of the most stunning birds on the planet.

The real showstopper here is the flying demonstrations, where eagles, hawks, and owls swoop right over your head. The handlers add to the excitement with captivating stories and even let the kids hold some of the smaller birds. If your family has any animal enthusiasts, this is an experience they’ll be raving about for ages.

Get Your Eyes Lost in Hazelwood Forest

Hazelwood Forest has a certain enchantment to it. It feels like stepping into a fairy tale, with its winding walking trails, whimsical sculptures, and a serene atmosphere that invites you to stay a while.

Enjoy a Family-Friendly Café or Restaurant

After exploring Sligo, you’re bound to work up an appetite, but don’t worry! there are plenty of fantastic places to grab a bite. For a laid-back family meal, Hooked is a local favorite, serving up hearty dishes that everyone will enjoy.

The relaxed atmosphere makes it a perfect spot for families looking to unwind after a day of adventures.

Experience Sligo’s Festivals

If you happen to be in Sligo during one of its lively festivals, you’re in for a real treat. The Sligo Summer Festival is brimming with music, delicious food, and family-friendly activities, while the Halloween Howl Festival promises spooky fun for kids of all ages. You can check choosesligo.com for any upcoming festivals in the areas around you. From art, history fests to live music, you can pick whichever you feel like exploring.

Don’t miss the Yeats Day Festival coming up in June, which celebrates the life and works of W.B. Yeats with a variety of events, from poetry readings to outdoor performances.
